The DJI Phantom 3 Standard is probably best for those who have at least flown one of these quadcopters once before in their life.  That’s not to say you couldn’t learn on this model as well.  Also, it comes ready to fly with GPS assisted flight.  This allows you to spend more time focusing on taking pictures in the sky.  It has an impressive half mile picture and live video streaming range that you can monitor over your mobile devices.

Setting The Standard

The Phantom 3 Standard battery takes me about 50 minutes to charge.  The mounted camera records in 2704×1520, 1920×1080, and 1280×720, and does so at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, or 60 fps, depending on the resolution you choose. The camera snaps pictures in RAW and JPEG formats. Depending on your location you may be required to register with the FAA Website before flying.  At first take off this quadcopter hovers at about 4 feet in the air from the ground.

DJI Phantom Buttons

The DJI Phantom 3 Standard is pretty easy to fly but be warned that if you try to use the GPS return flight without a GPS signal things might not work out so well.  Aside from the “Home” button there are “Take Off” and “Land” buttons which are very useful for newbies and lazy people like me.  There are many features for camera stabilization, warnings and low battery, which when triggered safely return the Phantom 3 Standard.

Do I Need A Data Plan?

Connecting my mobile device and using the application is easy. Although I connected my phone, the DJI Phantom 3 standard does not require data usage or a mobile device with a data plan.  It has a bunch of intelligent flight modes and I love having the Phantom 3 just follow me around.  But letting it go was quite nice with a flight range of up to a 1/2 mile and altitudes up to 400 feet.

Is the Phantom Fast? 

All in all this is a great quadcopter that is easy to fly.  It’s controls are smooth and setup was easy.  The weight of the Phantom 3 Standard is enough to take on some pretty heavy wind.  While it doesn’t record audio it can travel up to 45 mph and is very well crafted product for its price point category.
